Stephen Pierce (songwriter, singer, guitar), John McCane (songwriter, singer, bass) Dan Dockrill (songwriter, singer, guitar) and Jon Hussey (drums) are on a mission to craft pop music that's memorable but not manufactured. Their unique sound is derived from an attention to detail - including a drummer who inflicts a jazz style on rock - a keen sense of humor and original songs that combine intelligent lyrics with music that's full of surprises.

"All my favorite songwriters write things that are catchy and melodic," Pierce said. "The most important thing is for the music to be fun to listen to. We want people to enjoy our music, but we believe that popular music should also be art."

"When we say we strive to write something that is catchy or tuneful, it's because that's what we listen to and like to hear. It's not because we're formulating a strategy to take over the radio waves," McCane said.

The duo were both struggling musicians in Lawton, Oklahoma, but never actually worked together until they were students at the University of North Texas in Denton. McCane sought Pierce out after a mutual acquaintance informed him that a potential collaborator was in town. McCane convinced Pierce to form The Piletones with local musicians including The Zest of Yore drummer Jon Hussey. The first Pierce/McCane classic was a sweet ode to a pregnant prostitute called "Janis." The Piletones gained a following in the Denton area during its two years of existence, but the group was disbanded so the duo could focus on songwriting. The Zest of Yore grew from this shift of musical philosophies.

The band released their first EP in December 2003 and Dockrill joined ZOY in January 2004 to give the live shows the same rockin' power of the band's studio performance. The EP was received well by critics and sparked the band's work on their full-length debut, Throw It At The Moon.
